Types of Swimming Pools
Any artificially created body of
water that uses chlorine to manage bacteria and algae can be
qualified as a swimming pool.
You can find swimming pools in just about any
shape and size out there. Every swimming pool contains the following
elements: basin, drains, returns, water filter, motorized pump,
plastic plumbing, and chemical feeder. Water from the pool is pumped
through a filter system, treated with the appropriate chemicals, and
then pumped back into the pool.
Swimming pools are often classified by the construction of the
basin. Above ground pools sit above the ground, just as their name
implies. Above ground pool can be set up rather inexpensively with
the use of a prefabricated kit. In ground pools have a wide array of
basin materials. Fiberglass pools are constructed using fiberglass
reinforced plastic that has been molded into the shape of the basin.
The least expensive option for in ground pools is a vinyl lined
basin. The drawback of this type of basin is that the vinyl will
generally need to be replaced at least every ten years. By far the
most popular material for in ground pool basins is Gunite. This
material is very durable and can be accented with a fiberglass or
tile finish. The hardest materials used to make in ground pool
basins is poured concrete.
When it comes to public swimming pools, you have many options
including saltwater pools, children and toddler pools, heated indoor
pools, and heated outdoor pools. Many public pools also include
special features such as splash pads, bars, fountains, waterfalls,
and slides. Most facilities that have public pools will offer
lockers for safely placing your belongings while you are swimming.
You can experience resistance swimming in an exercise swimming pool
or swim spa. Swimming is a great form of exercise which can help to
control your body weight, increase your circulation, tone your body
contours, and increase strength and flexibility. There are a variety
of water exercises that can be done either in a class setting or
individually. Some of these include aerobics, yoga, walking, and
jobbing.
Swimming pools must be kept in the correct chemical balance in order
to prevent bacteria and other pathogens from spreading. An incorrect
chemical balance is not only potentially dangerous, but can damage
the pool and irritate the skin and eyes of the swimmers. Chlorine
and other chemicals will need to be regularly added to any pool in
order to disinfect the water. This is vital to ensuring the health
and hygiene of the pool water.
You can end up with a cramp if you swim immediately after eating a
heavy meal. You can avoid this potentially dangerous situation by
waiting at least one hour after a heavy meal to go swimming.
Swimming is an excellent exercise that is good for your body and
loads of fun at the same time.
